Having written before, regarding to the mission to correct my Myopia(nearsightedness), I’ve put LASIK in the wish list. I then started to browse some eye clinics in Japan, going thru all the available information about the general information (type of Lasik surgery, risk, eligibility, preparation before the surgery, and of course about the fee ;P)
I’ve settled appointment for the preliminary examination and consultation in Minamiaoyama Clinic.
Gosh, it’ll take two and half hours to three hours for the full eye examination. In order to check the eyes, they will apply eye-drops that’ll dilate the pupils which will last to 3-4 hours.
During that period, up close vision might become blurred, and will easily be blinded by bright light.
That’s why they inform the patients to refrain from driving, instead, returning home by train. (this will be no problem for me, as I’m not having car. haha..)
I’m still concerned about few points for considerations :
Since I don’t think I have stable prescription for my contact lenses for the last two years, not that sure though coz I didn’t have my eyes checked. I only experience that the vision’s not so clear though it’s already -9.0 diopters for both eyes.😛
Three months back, I substantively had eye irritation. Resting my eyes from soft lenses for week, but the irritation did come again. So my supposition went to the contact lenses reason, but after getting the new ones, the irritation started. But somehow, I gave up as stubborn girl and visited doctor.
I had the eye drop prescription and after a full week rest from soft lenses combined with the prescription, my
beauty eyes finally recovered.
Anyway, they are going to find out in the examination whether I’m eligible for the laser vision correction or not (abt 20% ppl are not able to have it done for some reasons), so just let them judge later by next week.🙂
2) What to Refrain before the eye examination?
This point quite confused me.
In Minamiaoyama clinic, I’m informed to wear either glasses or soft lenses (bring along the case).
But as in Kobe Clinic, it’s suggested to stop wearing soft lenses and change them to glasses for one week(soft lenses) and 2-3weeks (hard lenses) before the the exam due to influence it may cause to the surface of the cornea.
I think I’ll start wearing glasses tomorrow then, dun wanna have my 3 hours examination turning out useless.
3) Which surgery fits me? Fee?
For examination fee, it’s usually 5000yen, but it’s the 10th anniversary, it’ll be no charge.
Surgery fee for both eyes:
A. Minamiaoyama offer different types of surgery procedures:
– Lasik vs Custom Lasik vs spacer Phakic IOL (Phakic Intraocular Lens)*
(399,000 Yen vs 504,000 Yen vs +- 1 mios Yen)
B. Kobe Clinic offer the procedures as follows :
– IntraLase (Epi-LASIK or PRK) vs I-LASIK (Epi-LASIK or PRK)
(300,000Yen vs 350,000Yen)
4) Post Surgery
There are some care instructions afterwards :
– Refrain from exercising for a week and from strenuous exercise(i.e.weight lifting, boxing) for a month after the surgery.
– Refrain from swimming, diving for one month after the surgery.
– Refrain from the eye make for one week after the surgery.
– Take prescribed eye drop(s) and other medication as directed.
So I’ve to be really ready mentally for obeying these rules. And sure need to plan if I’m going to make it done by this December. The holiday’ll be a very short one for New Year one, it’s about 1 week. whew..
Do you guys have any knowledge to share about the Lasik? Any information is welcomed and highly appreciated. ^^

LASIK is presently the most common type of laser vision correction procedure. It corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The cost of LASIK surgery on one eye is 262,500 JPY and on both eyes is 504,000 JPY, which includes consumption tax.
# 10th Anniversary Plan 504,000 JPY >> 399,000JPY
Custom LASIK (Wavefront-guided or Topography-guided LASIK)
Among the new approaches, the Custom LASIK is the most promising approach. With Custom LASIK procedure, we can formulate a custom treatment plan in order to treat multiple aberrations, potentially resulting in sharper vision as compared to other options.
The cost of Custom LASIK on one eye is 315,000 JPY and on both eyes is 609,000 JPY, which includes consumption tax. For the anniversary, they offer the campaign price as low as 504,000JPY
Phakic IOL is an effective procedure for patients who have thin corneas or high myopia. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Artisan Phakic IOL manufactured by Ophtec BV on September 10, 2004. The Phakic IOL is inserted under the cornea. The Phakic IOL implant functions as an internal contact lens. The procedure is effective for both nearsighted and farsighted patients.
New Phakic IOL called as Artiflex IOL was introduced in 2005. Artiflex IOL is inserted into the eye through a small incision; this results in rapid visual improvement and induces lesser degree of astigmatism.
The cost of Phakic IOL surgery on one eye is 630,000 JPY, which includes consumption tax.

IntraLase , A newly developed technology, appears to enhance the safety of LASIK vision correction by using laser energy. The flap gets folded back, and an excimer laser is used to
remove (or “ablate”) some tissue from the newly exposed surface. Then the
flap is put back in place, resulting in a reshaped cornea that produces
better vision. With IntraLase, a special laser is used instead of a blade to
create the flap. Then the usual excimer laser does the ablation. So in the
IntraLase procedure, two different lasers are used, which is why LASIK
surgeons sometimes call it “bladeless” or “all-laser” LASIK.
I-LASIK is IntraLase+CustomVue.CustomVue is an individualized laser vision correction procedure that is WaveScan driven.WaveScan Technology produces a detailed map of the eye, which is much like a fingerprint, no two are alike. WaveScan identifies and measures imperfections in an individual’s eye 25 times more precisely than standard methods used for glasses and contact lenses. Your doctor uses these highly precise WaveScan measurements to plan the CustomVue treatment delivered by the VISX STAR S4 IR Excimer Laser System. The CustomVue procedure can produce better vision than is possible with glasses or contact lenses.
